Half-Day Lake Ontario Ice Fishing Adventure

Ready to drill some holes and drop lines through the ice? Our private half-day ice fishing trip on Lake Ontario is the perfect way to experience the thrill of winter angling. From April through the Christmas season, we'll get you out on the frozen lake chasing after prized catches like salmon, trout, and smallmouth bass. Whether you're a seasoned ice angler or it's your first time wielding an auger, our experienced guides will make sure you have a blast and hopefully land some fish!

What to Expect on the Ice

Bundle up and join us for 5 hours of ice fishing action on beautiful Lake Ontario. We'll set you up with everything you need - rods, reels, tackle, bait, and even the ice auger to drill your fishing holes. Our heated shanties keep you comfortable while you wait for that telltale tug on your line. Don't forget to bring your New York State fishing license and dress in warm layers. We'll teach you all about reading ice conditions, using tip-ups, and the best jigging techniques to entice those fish lurking below.

Ice Fishing 101

If you're new to ice fishing, don't worry - we'll walk you through the whole process. We start by using our gas-powered auger to drill holes through the ice, which can be up to 2 feet thick in mid-winter. Then we'll set up portable shelters to block the wind and keep you cozy. We use a mix of techniques including jigging with small lures and setting up tip-ups - flag systems that alert you when a fish takes the bait. The key is to be patient and ready to spring into action when you get a bite. There's nothing quite like the rush of pulling a big lake trout up through a tiny hole in the ice!

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

"Second time using Angling Edge Charters such a great time. I have been on a lot of charters and Sean is really the best. Especially if you're taking a kid I can't say enough about his knowledge and patience. Thanks again I will be back." - Ray

Species You'll Want to Hook

Smallmouth Bass: These hard-fighting fish are a favorite target through the ice. In winter, they tend to hang out in deeper water near drop-offs and underwater structure. Use jigs tipped with minnows or soft plastics to entice them. A 3-4 pound smallie will give you a serious battle as you try to coax it up through the ice hole!

Steelhead Trout: Winter steelhead fishing on Lake Ontario is world-class. These chrome rockets patrol the nearshore waters, often cruising in less than 10 feet of water. We use spawn sacs or small jigs to target them. When you hook into a fresh steelhead, hold on tight - they're known for acrobatic jumps and blistering runs, even in frigid water.

Chinook Salmon: While most salmon fishing happens in warmer months, you can still catch some bruiser kings through the ice. We target them in deeper water using large spoons or cut bait. Landing a 20+ pound Chinook through a 10-inch hole is a true test of an angler's skill and patience.

Brown Trout: Lake Ontario's brown trout are some of the biggest you'll find anywhere. In winter, we often find them in 15-30 feet of water near creek mouths or underwater shelves. Minnow-imitating jigs or small spoons are deadly on these spotted beauties. A 10-pound brown is a trophy catch that will have you grinning from ear to ear.

Lake Trout: The ultimate deepwater predator, lake trout move shallow enough in winter to target through the ice. We often find them suspending over deep basins. Jigging with large minnow-tipped spoons is the ticket for lakers. When you hook into a 15+ pound lake trout, you're in for an arm-wrenching battle as you try to turn its head up towards the hole.

Time to Book Your Spot

Our half-day ice fishing trips on Lake Ontario offer a unique winter adventure you won't soon forget. Brown Trout

Brown trout in Lake Ontario are wily and challenging to catch. These fish average 5-10 pounds but can reach 20+. Look for them near shore in spring and fall, moving to deeper, cooler water in summer. Browns are prized for their fighting ability and delicious pink flesh. Anglers love targeting them for the mix of power and finesse required. To entice a strike, try trolling or casting spoons and stickbaits. Dawn and dusk are often most productive. A local tip: use scented plastics when the bite's slow. Browns can be selective, so match your lures to local baitfish. The thrill of outsmarting a big brown trout makes all the effort worthwhile.

Brown Trout

Chinook Salmon

Chinook salmon are the kings of Lake Ontario. These bruisers average 15-25 pounds but can reach over 30. You'll find them in deep, open water during summer, moving shallower in fall to spawn. Chinooks are prized for their hard-fighting ability and rich, flavorful meat. Anglers love the challenge of battling these powerful fish. To hook into one, troll with downriggers using flashers and flies or spoons. Early mornings and overcast days are often most productive. A local trick is to use cut bait like herring when the bite's tough. Keep your drag set right - these fish can peel off line in seconds. The rush of hooking a big king salmon is something every angler should experience.

Chinook Salmon

Lake Trout

Lake trout are the deep-water kings of Lake Ontario. These fish average 10-20 pounds but can top 30. You'll find them suspended over deep basins, often 50-100 feet down. Spring and fall are prime as they move shallower to feed. Lakers are prized for their strong fights and rich, oily meat. Anglers target them for the challenge of fishing deep and the satisfaction of landing a trophy. To connect with one, try jigging heavy spoons or trolling with downriggers. A local trick is to use glow-in-the-dark lures in low light. Be patient - the bite can be subtle in cold water. When you hook into a big laker, get ready for a battle royal all the way to the net.

Lake Trout

Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass are a real treat to catch in Lake Ontario. These feisty fish typically run 2-6 pounds and put up an impressive fight. You'll find them around rocky areas, drop-offs, and submerged structure in 5-30 feet of water. Spring and fall are prime seasons when smallies move shallow to feed. Anglers love targeting them for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic jumps when hooked. To entice a bite, try tossing soft plastic jerkbaits or tube jigs near cover. A local trick is to use a drop shot rig with a small finesse worm when the bite gets tough. These fish can be picky, so experiment with retrieves until you dial it in. The satisfaction of landing a chunky smallmouth makes the challenge worthwhile.

Smallmouth Bass

Steelhead Trout

Steelhead in Lake Ontario are hard-fighting fish that'll test your skills. These lake-run rainbows average 5-10 pounds but can top 20. Look for them near river mouths and along shoreline drop-offs. Fall through spring is prime time as they move in to spawn. Steelhead are prized for their powerful runs and acrobatic leaps when hooked. Anglers target them for the thrill of the fight and their tasty orange flesh. To connect with one, try drifting egg sacs or swinging streamer flies in current seams. A local tip: downsize your line and use fluorocarbon leaders when the water's clear. Be ready for explosive strikes and long battles - landing a chrome-bright steelhead is an experience you won't forget.
